CWP7 1.29 SECURITY ALERT: IMPORTANT USER PANEL, API AND ACCOUNT ISOLATION FIXES

Published: November 1, 2026
Software: Control Web Panel (CWP7)
Security Release: Version 1.29
Release Date: October 31, 2026
Security Priority: HIGH
Affected Versions: Earlier CWP versions may contain the addressed weaknesses. Exact introduction versions have not been disclosed.
Exploitation Status: No independently verified exploitation campaign identified for these newly disclosed issues.

1. IMPORTANT CWP7 SECURITY UPDATE

Control Web Panel has released version 1.29, introducing substantial security improvements across its user panel, internal API, external API, authentication mechanisms, backup operations, and account management functions.

This release addresses several weaknesses that could affect the confidentiality, integrity, and isolation of customer accounts on shared hosting servers.

The update is particularly important for administrators managing multiple hosting accounts, reseller environments, or servers where customers have access to the CWP user panel.

IMPORTANT:

These are security corrections confirmed by the CWP development team.

The vendor has not published individual CVE identifiers, CVSS scores, or complete exploitation requirements for every issue.

The release notes do not establish that all weaknesses were remotely exploitable without authentication.

2. USER PANEL INTERNAL API SECURITY

One of the most important changes concerns authorization and input validation within the CWP user-panel internal API.

According to the official changelog, several operations now require valid authenticated sessions.

These include:
  • Package usage information.
  • Account statistics.
  • SpamExperts operations.
  • Mail pipes.
  • Backup initiation.
  • Database restoration.

Additional validation has been introduced for subdomain management, addon domains, FTP accounts, redirects, protected directories, reseller operations, and streaming services.

User-supplied values are now validated before they reach system commands.

Files inside customer home directories are accessed using the corresponding account's permissions.

Security significance:

Insufficient authorization checks can expose sensitive management operations to unauthorized requests.

The actual impact depends on the affected operation and the authentication requirements of the previous implementation.

3. TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION SECURITY

CWP 1.29 changes how two-factor authentication is verified.

Previously, the user-panel login process could receive the 2FA secret.

The updated implementation asks the internal API to verify the submitted authentication code without returning the secret to the login page.

Why this matters:

Two-factor authentication secrets are sensitive credentials.

Exposing these secrets outside the trusted verification component can weaken the protection provided by two-factor authentication.

The vendor has corrected this behavior.

However, the release notes do not establish that an unauthenticated remote attacker could retrieve these secrets.

Recommended action:

Update CWP and review authentication-related logs if suspicious account activity has been observed.

4. BACKUP SECURITY AND CROSS-ACCOUNT DATABASE ACCESS

The release introduces important improvements to backup creation and database restoration.

According to the vendor:
  • Backups are now created in protected staging directories.
  • Completed archives are written to the account's backupcwp directory with appropriate account permissions.
  • Database restoration uses a restricted account.
  • Restore operations are limited to databases belonging to the hosting account.
  • Only expected CWP database user and privilege definitions are processed from backup archives.
  • Stored backup filenames are validated.
  • Backups no longer include databases belonging to other accounts with similar username prefixes.
  • Unused legacy restore actions have been removed.

Security significance:

Shared hosting platforms must prevent one customer from accessing or modifying another customer's data.

Incorrect database ownership checks or insufficiently restricted backup operations can undermine this isolation.

Recommended action:

Review historical backup archives and investigate unexpected database contents.

Do not assume that installing the update automatically removes previously created archives containing unintended data.

5. PRIVILEGED COMMAND EXECUTION AND ACCOUNT ISOLATION

CWP 1.29 significantly changes how user-panel operations interact with the operating system.

The internal helper responsible for executing system commands now runs operations with the permissions of the relevant hosting account.

Administrative operations requiring elevated privileges are restricted to resources belonging to that account.

These include:
  • DNS zone management.
  • SSL certificate operations.
  • PHP version selection.
  • MySQL process information.
  • Cron management.

The vendor also confirms that a legacy internal action capable of executing arbitrary commands has been removed.

Application installers and WordPress management operations now use the hosting account's permissions.

Security significance:

Executing customer-controlled operations with excessive privileges can create opportunities for privilege escalation or cross-account access.

Restricting operations to the correct account reduces this risk.

IMPORTANT:

The release notes do not provide sufficient evidence to classify the removed legacy action as an independently verified unauthenticated remote-code-execution vulnerability.

6. MYSQL ACCOUNT OWNERSHIP VALIDATION

The user-panel MySQL Manager now performs stricter ownership checks.

The vendor reports that some previous checks could match databases or users belonging to different hosting accounts with similar names.

Version 1.29 restricts database, user, and privilege changes to resources owned by the requesting account.

This is particularly important on shared hosting servers.

Recommended action:

Investigate unexplained database modifications and verify that application database credentials have access only to their intended databases.

7. EXTERNAL API SECURITY — PORT 2304

CWP 1.29 introduces additional permission restrictions for account backup and migration operations.

These operations now require API keys with appropriate backup permissions, full permissions, or the designated CWP-to-CWP migration preset.

Other API keys, including keys intended only for billing operations, can no longer perform these sensitive actions.

Security significance:

API credentials should have only the permissions required for their intended purpose.

Excessive API privileges increase the potential damage if a key is exposed or misused.

Recommended action:
  • Review active API keys.
  • Restrict API access to trusted source IP addresses.
  • Avoid unrestricted API permissions where unnecessary.
  • Investigate unexpected backup or migration operations.
  • Restrict external access to port 2304 wherever possible.

8. MODSECURITY OWASP LATEST — IMPORTANT PROTECTION FAILURE

One of the most significant findings in this release concerns ModSecurity.

The CWP development team confirms that installations using the OWASP Latest ruleset could detect suspicious requests without blocking them.

The problem occurred because the ruleset initialization file was not properly loaded.

Consequently, anomaly scores were not accumulated as expected.

Attack attempts could appear in security logs while requests continued to reach the hosted applications.

IMPORTANT:

Detection is not the same as prevention.

A firewall that records suspicious requests but does not enforce blocking rules may provide less protection than administrators expect.

What changes in CWP 1.29?
  • New OWASP Latest installations enable blocking by default.
  • Existing installations receive an option to enable blocking.
  • CWP tests Apache configuration before enabling the rules.

Recommended action:

Open the ModSecurity configuration page and verify the effective protection mode.

Enable blocking where appropriate, after checking compatibility with hosted applications.

Monitor false positives carefully.

Note:

This issue concerns the CWP integration of the OWASP Latest ruleset. It is distinct from the previously addressed OWASP CRS 3 configuration issue.

9. ROUNDCUBE AND WEBMAIL FILE EXPOSURE

The release corrects access restrictions for sensitive Roundcube files.

The vendor confirms that existing restrictions did not properly apply on certain webmail ports.

The updated configuration prevents direct downloads of sensitive installation and configuration resources, including:
  • Roundcube log files.
  • Configuration directories.
  • SQL installation files.
  • Vendor and dependency files.
  • Composer-related files.
  • Other protected application resources.

Relevant webmail ports include 2095 and 2096.

Security significance:

Exposed application files can reveal configuration information and other sensitive operational details.

Administrators should verify that sensitive Roundcube resources are not publicly accessible.

10. PHP DEFENDER IMPROVEMENTS IN CWP 1.28

The immediately preceding CWP 1.28 release also introduced important PHP Defender corrections.

The vendor addressed cases where Snuffleupagus protection was not functioning because:
  • PHP processes could not access the required rules.
  • The Snuffleupagus extension was missing.
  • The installed extension was incompatible with the selected PHP version.

The CWP Security Center now identifies certain affected installations as "Not active".

Recommended action:

Check PHP Defender status for each installed PHP version.

An installed security extension should not be assumed operational without verification.

11. SAFE READ-ONLY SECURITY INVESTIGATION

The following commands are intended for initial investigation on CWP7 servers.

They do not install software, modify configuration files, or restart services.

Step 1 — Check installed CWP version
echo "===== CWP VERSION ====="

grep -E 'webpanel_version' \
/usr/local/cwpsrv/htdocs/resources/admin/include/version.php \
2>/dev/null || true

Step 2 — Review listening management ports
echo "===== PANEL AND API PORTS ====="

ss -lntp 2>/dev/null |
grep -E ':(2030|2031|2082|2083|2095|2096|2302|2304)\b' || true

A listening service is not necessarily reachable from the internet.

Review firewall and upstream network restrictions separately.

Step 3 — Review CSF configuration
echo "===== CSF FIREWALL ====="

grep -E '^(TESTING|TCP_IN|TCP6_IN) ?=' \
/etc/csf/csf.conf 2>/dev/null || true

Additional firewall rules and external network controls must also be considered.

Step 4 — Inspect ModSecurity configuration
echo "===== MODSECURITY CONFIGURATION ====="

grep -R -n -E \
'SecRuleEngine|crs-setup.conf' \
/usr/local/apache/conf \
/usr/local/apache/modsecurity* \
2>/dev/null | head -40

This preliminary inspection does not prove that OWASP anomaly-score blocking is effective.

Verify the active ruleset and enforcement mode through CWP and the loaded Apache configuration.

Step 5 — Review account backup directories
echo "===== ACCOUNT BACKUP DIRECTORIES ====="

find /home -maxdepth 3 \
-type d -name backupcwp \
-printf '%m %u:%g %p\n' \
2>/dev/null | head -40

Step 6 — Review unexpected privileged processes
echo "===== ROOT PROCESSES ====="

ps -eo user,pid,ppid,args --width 180 |
awk '$1=="root" {print}' |
head -60

Unexpected processes require investigation.

The presence of a root-owned process does not independently establish malicious activity.

12. INDICATORS OF POSSIBLE SECURITY INCIDENTS

No verified attacker IP addresses, malware hashes, or unique exploit signatures have been published for these newly documented CWP 1.29 fixes.

Administrators should investigate:
  • Unexpected backup or migration operations.
  • Database modifications involving unrelated hosting accounts.
  • Unauthorized reseller account changes.
  • Unexpected FTP accounts or password changes.
  • Suspicious API activity.
  • Unrecognized administrative actions.
  • Unexpected access to sensitive Roundcube resources.
  • Security events detected by ModSecurity without corresponding blocking actions.
  • Unexplained privileged command execution.

These indicators are investigation leads, not proof of exploitation.

Preserve relevant logs and suspicious files before performing incident remediation.

13. RECOMMENDED SECURITY ACTIONS
  • Verify the installed CWP version.
  • Review the official CWP 1.29 release notes.
  • Prepare verified backups before updating.
  • Test the update on a representative server when possible.
  • Apply the current vendor security release.
  • Review internal and external API permissions.
  • Restrict administrative interfaces to trusted networks.
  • Verify that two-factor authentication operates correctly.
  • Review account and database ownership restrictions.
  • Check historical backup archives for unintended data.
  • Verify ModSecurity blocking behavior.
  • Confirm PHP Defender is active where configured.
  • Monitor service health after upgrading.

Administrators managing multiple hosting servers should use a controlled rollout.
